Hello there and thank you for checking out Halo Custom Edition! I have written a manual for your use to get familiar with Halo CE and enjoy the features Halo CE has in store for you!
~What is Halo CE?
Halo Custom Edition is a multiplayer only version of Halo released in 2004. This will cost nothing, however you need the Halo PC CD to install it and use it. This version has a improved netcode, small tweaks, and much more goodies in it. The main thing that is so special about Halo CE is that custom maps, which you can make using the HEK (Halo Editing Kit), can be played on this! That adds so much excitement for the game and much more fun than just playing Blood Glutch and other old maps all the time. This is hands down, the better game to use than halo pc and is much more fun!
~Where can I download it?

Other sites have it but these are most commonly used
~What is the HEK?
Halo Editing Kit. Used to create custom maps and mods for Halo CE. Includes: Gureilla: used to open and modify tags and settings. Definitely a program you want to get familiar with if you want to make custom weapons, vehicles, etc. Sapian: used to populate maps, add spawn points, weapons, vehicles, etc Tool: used to compile data HEK Tutorial: a basic tutorial on how to create a map- credit goes to haloimpulse.com as I didn't have much to say on this program as I don't use it.
~Where can I download it?
Same sites as I said above.
~Information to clear up confusion on the 1.07 patch:
Gearboxsoftware release a patch for Halo CE which has caused some confusion for some people and I thought I might as well clear some of that up.
The patch addresses a rare hang that could occur if a malicious individual (hacker) purposely imitates a game client and sends invalid data to a server- credit to halomaps.org
Gearbox at first released the patch and forced us to do it manually without telling us that it would soon be automatic. When it went automatic, they didn't take down the message that there was a patch that had to be download manually which has caused a whole lot of confusion to some people.
To get to the point, if you have updated automatically YOU ARE FINE, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT UPDATING MANUALLY AS IT IS THE SAME PATCH!

You should also install the dedicated server patch if you plan on using a dedicated server anytime soon.
~Custom Maps:
This is the best feature on Halo CE hands down, being able to play custom maps which there are a lot out such as some of the Halo 2 maps, wartorn 1, 2, and 3, Delta Ruins, and so on. There is also tons of maps in process, such as the famed Legend of Zelda map pack, Halo 2 maps, and so on. There is just do much to play and so much coming out! Halo CE has plenty of great maps that are a blast to play!
~What maps are there to look forward to?
The second wave of Halo 2 CE modding is about to hit us, and there appear to be some big surprises in store. If you're interested in Zelda, Jahrain's team is doing a full conversion- meaning NOTHING from halo CE will be left, it will all be Zelda. Seraphim's Metriod mod team is also doing a full conversion to Metriod. Ultimate_Dragon and his Starfox team are working on a Starfox Conversion as well.
As well as these, some amazing maps just pop up with no advertising on occasion. You just have to stick around for those! These maps you don’t want to miss!
~Where Do I Download Maps?
There are plenty of resources to download maps from. The following are commonly used:
HERE
Other Mirrors:
http://www.halomaps.org
http://www.haloimpulse.com
http://www.halomaps.co.uk
http://www.halo2ce.epgservers.com/downloads/ (only for halo2ce team's maps)
There are other places to get maps but these are the most commonly used.
If you want to catch up on some maps or get started, download a map pack which has plenty of maps for your use: http://halomaps.co.uk/forum/get_other.php?file=Hall Of Fame Map Pack V2 (389mb).rar
~What's a .RAR? And how do I open the file?
It is almost like a .ZIP and it can be opened by WINRAR or IZArc.
You can get those programs from the following:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
http://www.izarc.org/download.html
~After I Download a map and unrar it, whats the .map file and where do I put it?
The .map file is the map. The map file goes in your Halo CE Maps Folder which you can find here: C rogram FilesMicrosoft GamesHalo Custom Editionmaps
Copy the .map file and paste it in the maps folder. It's that easy!
~What are some of the more important maps to get?
Wartorn 1, 2, 3, and 4 (yes 4 wartorns)
New Mombassa Classic
Halo 2 CE New Mombassa
Halo 2 CE Zanzibar
Coagulation
YoyorastIsland
Hyrule Fields
Delta Ruins
Cold Rush
Hugeass
And any other maps that you see are widely played on a lot!
~Okay, so I went on a huge downloading spree with all these awesome maps I saw. I go to boot up CE, and it takes FOREVER to load! What's up with that?
Most of the map files are over 10 megabytes. The more maps you have, the longer it takes for CE to load. Methods to avoid this are: keep the popular CE maps in the maps folder, and the ones that aren't really popular in another folder, ready for quick movement.
There's also a program called map manager which solves the problem and can be very useful for you.
~Download Map Manager (Not Required)

~When I set up a certain time, it is completely different from what I want. Any way to fix that?
It is a gametype bug that gearbox forgot to fix or wasn’t able to fix it. There isn’t a way to fix it but to get around that problem, download the gametype fix which is very useful and works great!
Gametype fix: http://halomaps.co.uk/forum/get_oth...gametypefix.exe
~I don't like a certain map and I think I can do better. How do I create custom content?
There are many good tutorials to get you started with using the Halo Editing Kit. You can find many tutorials in the tutorials section of http://www.halomaps.org/
(H2files Tut soon)
~Okay, so I heard all this great stuff about Halo CE. I decided to download it, and I see about 70 players online. Why is that?
Play in the late afternoon or night time (depending on where you live) and there will be plenty of players waiting for you to join.
~Can I have Halo custom edition AND Halo PC installed on my computer at the same time?
Yes. Should you ever want to go play a campaign level on PC without the hassle of reinstalling, feel free.
~My clan is interested in playing CE, but there doesn't appear to be a league for it. What gives?
There is a forming CE League, though it is not fully formed yet.
~Are there places to talk about Halo CE?
Yes indeed there is, http://www.gearboxsoftware.com (go to the forums), Epg.epgservers.net/bb, and others are around to talk about halo ce. But the two I mentioned are the best places to go if you want to talk a lot ands stuff. Fun community and I think you will have a lot of talking to them if you get on the right foot as some newbies don't.
~If I don't like Halo CE, can I go back to Halo PC?
Sure you can but if you are on a forum, it would be very wise NOT to state a good bye Halo CE thread.
I hope all this information help people who want to get into Halo CE or are new to it.
If you have any questions, ask on the forums at gearbox or where there might be Halo CE! Or just ask me, I'll be around http://www.gearboxsoftware.com in the forums
Anyway, hope you enjoy your stay at Halo CE and enjoy the game as I do. Enjoy and have fun!
